Get a ball and play catch with them. It'll build hand eye coordination, give them ball sense that will translate to all ball sports, they get exercise, and it'll build your relationship with them that they'll have for the rest of their lives.
My dad thought buying shit for ss made a great dad. He worked all the time. That song "cats in the cradle" is real close to my relationship with my dad.

I've got grandchildren and I second this. I love the memories of the time I spent playing basketball, football, baseball and other sports with my son and daughter. Take them swimming and camping too. Get out and leave the electronics behind. Save those for cold wet days.

I'm in the same boat, two children and still nursing my youngest. Phone/tablet games are the most straightforward platform to use. Easiest to abandon in an instant and pick up for a random 3am feeding.

Back and forth between consoles & PC (Score:3)
Over time I've found I've gone back and forth between PCs and consoles, depending on what game I'm in to at the moment. FPS games usually draw me back to PC, like Battlefield 1942, Crysis and Left 4 Dead 2 being prime examples. Games like Mario Kart and Gears of War (especially for horde mode) draw me back to consoles.

It is not as if there are many companies that build PCs that want to be anonymous, to be the "Alan Smithee" of PC manufacturers because they are so ashamed of their product.

I have an iMac that I bought 3 years ago or so. You can hardly call that a gaming machine. I only play adventure games so I don't care about its lack of the greatest videocard and sound system ever.

Nonsense. How you use something doesn't change what it was designed for. Using an iPad to make phone calls doesn't turn it into an iPhone, playing games on an iMac doesn't make it a gaming PC.
If that's what was intended, they'd have simply said "branded PC".

I used to roll my own. But as I got older, I just wanted to play - not to tinker. So my last build was by a company in Minnesota that used to be called "General Nanosystems". Awesome build, great quality. Alas, they didn't survive the recession. I'm just starting to look for a new rig as my old one still plays the games I like pretty well.

Same here. Most PCs are fine for modern games with just a couple of upgrades. Grab any $1000 computer and put in a new graphics card, power supply, and SSD and you're good to go for 99% of games. And by "new graphics card" I mean whatever Nvidia card is one generation behind.

There is a steam sale going on now which is pricing PC games ridiculously cheaply. You can get Portal 1 & 2 for $3 for example.
Dolphin, the Wii emulator on the PC is impressive and can play most Wii games with Wii remotes.
In terms of console exclusives I have been playing the PS3 for a long time because it has tons of fun games. I don't plan on buying a PS4 since the library has never really materialized. There still is not a single true Gran Tourismo game on the PS4, which is a terrible stain on Sony'

I used to surf the popular sites like AnandTech, Tom's Review, etc. for a week to see what components are good. Order stuff off NewEgg to save a bundle paying attention to parts that are at least 4 out of 5 eggs. Ironically I find putting together a new PC meditate-like. Gaming boxes have lasted over a decade due to not picking cheap parts.
These days I find I no longer play the upgrade game since having i7 4770K, 980Ti, and multiple SSDs are _finally_ "good enough." -- although indies don't seem to understand the concept of multi-threading and can STILL bring a modern GPU down its knees. /me glares at Path of Exile, and Minecraft.
It is also hard to find motivation to keep playing the same crap that gets recycled every year with obnoxious DLC. New games look prettier but the gameplay is still just as lame. I'm thankful that indies such as Terraria, Minecraft, are trying something different.
I used to be a hardcore gamer but I find I would rather spend my time programming, working on my backlog of interesting programming projects, then just wasting hours accomplishing nothing.
I'm still waiting for the Holy Grail of monitors -- one that is the Trinity of:
* 120 Hz
* 10-bit / channel
* less then $500
I noticed that my console gaming goes in spurts -- based on what is available at the time. But even the consoles have jumped the shark with shitty performance (sub 30 fps in places), huge 0 day patches, game design is a grind fest, and stupid QTE Quick Time Events [wikipedia.org] for boss fights. (/me glares at Tomb Raider.) It is like everyone got stuck on Dragon's Lair or something.
Mobile also should probably get a mention. How many other people play a quick 2 minute game when on the crapper?

I take my time while building my machine because I like to do a good job with cable management -- everything is tucked neatly away.
I also run memtest x86 on all my machines, benchmark SSDs, run 3DMark to make sure everything is functioning 100% correctly.

If you want a higher frame rate, turn down the graphics settings. Some graphics options only exist to murder your frame rate (e.g. 16x MSAA).

Minecraft is pretty much single threaded.
I've got a 1080 and a 5930k, Minecraft doesn't even make the core clock kick up to full speed while rendering at 5760x1080. Although I don't have any crazy shader mods running (just reshade doing smaa).
I could turn on 32xS or 16xQ AA and bring any modern GPU to it's knees

I used to be all in on PC gaming, built my own rigs and kept them updated. But graphic card costs, games which don't get as much in trade as consoles forced me to abandon PC gaming completely. I think it more boils down to playing on a PC or setting up a console in your living area.
Games on a PC don't need to be costly. If you wait a year they're usually 50% off... wait two and they're 75% off in the sales. I've made three purchases in the current steam sale and only spend $23.
Console games may come down a bit, and may go on sale occasionally, but you end up paying way more (even if you trade in) for console gaming in the long run unless you only buy a small number of games.

I use a branded PC, a HP Z420 Workstation to be exact. It was never initially designed to be a gaming system, but with a Xeon E5, 32GiB RAM, and the addition of a decent video card, it handles things quite beautifully. But it isn't a "Branded Gaming PC", nor is it non-branded.

I retired from a 2008 rig late last year. It didn't seem slow, and to be sure the Q6600 was no slouch in 2008. I wasn't really looking for an upgrade.
But I had an opportunity to score some gear in exchange for not very much work. So: i3-6100, whose on-die GPU was on par with the performance of the huge, silly-thirsty Radeon card from before. 8GB of DDR4 was cheap at the time, and so was a B150 motherboard with caps that should outlive me.

I want a games appliance. I don't want to deal with troubleshooting. I also don't want the OCD experience of trying to optimize the games for my particular setup... And I know that if the options are there I won't be able to resist tweaking to see if maybe things couldn't be just a little better. I'm not a real gamer, so I've got a "brand" _office_ PC, just a bit enhanced with a simple GPU, more disk space, and additional RAM. But this is more than sufficient for my occasional gaming needs.
My daughter wanted to have a "Real Gaming Laptop" for last Christmas. I told her she could purchase such a rig from her own money, I would subsidize this project with the money I would spend on a normal (good but non-gaming) laptop. She looked up the prices for her dream rig, and now has a good, non-gaming laptop

I bought a gaming laptop from an OEM called Sager in early 2014.
As I learned when I was researching the purchase, almost all gaming laptops (I think the Dell/Alienwares are different) actually custom fit/rebrands of one manufacturer: Clevo.
Since probably very few have heard of either Sager or Clevo it seems closer to "non-branded" although technically it has a brand on it (Sager). I did buy it without an OS pre-installed though. Saved a little money.

Are you able to get all of your games running under WINE?
I'm looking to retire my current gaming PC. When I built it, I had a retail copy of Windows I got as a Christmas present from a friend at MS. At the time, I'd heard about a lot of problems running games under WINE, so I made the system dual boot Windows/Debian.
I'm guessing that the 43% of respondents who build their own systems don't run out and buy a retail copy of Windows. How good is WINE these days? I want to play "Dawn of War 3" when it comes

SOMEDAY, after the college bills are paid, I MIGHT have time left to play, but I'm afraid that I won't have any energy by then because I suspect there will be grandkids to soak up my time...

I have two STEM majors kids too.. The eldest is in the middle of a math degree and will graduate with honors, the youngest has expressed an interest in Computer Science, but has one more year in high school, where I am teaching him programming basics in Java...
